Invited Speakers

The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), a Deemed to be University, invites researchers to submit unpublished research papers for 7th International Conference on “Empirical Issues in International Trade & Finance (EIITF)” on 14th and 15th December, 2020 at its Kolkata Campus, India. The Conference provides a forum for dissemination of modern research and facilitates exchange of ideas among renowned scholars from India and abroad.

The earlier EIITF conferences hosted eminent key notes speakers like Prof. L. Alan Winters, distinguished Professor of Economics at University of Sussex, Prof. Joshua Aizenman, distinguised Professor of International Relations and Economics at University of Southern California. Jeffrey Bergstrand, Professor at University of Notre Dame, Gita Gopinath, Professor of International Studies and Economics, Harvard University and Chief Economist of the International Monetary Fund, Kala Krishna, Professor of Economics at the Pennsylvania State University, MaitreeshGhatak, Professor of Economics, London School of Economics, among others.

7th Conference on EIITF will host the following esteemed academicians as invited speakers.

Pol Antrās (TBC) Robert G. Ory Professor of Economics at Harvard University

Prof. Pol Antrās is Robert G. Ory Professor of Economics where he is teaching since 2003. He is a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) where he served as Director of International Trade and Organization Working Group. He is also a Research Affiliate at Centre of Economic Policy Research and is a member of CESifo’s Research Network.

Professor Antrās’ research fields include international economics and applied theory. One of his recent works is focuses on the analysis of global value chains and on the interplay between trade, inequality and costly redistribution.
Since 2015, Prof. Antrās has served as the editor of the Quarterly Journal of Economics. Previously, he was on the editorial board of the Annual Review of Economics, the American Economic Review, the Journal of International Economics, the Review of Economic Studies, among other journals. He was awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship in 2007, Fundaciķn banco Ferrero Prize in 2009 among other distinctions. He was also elected Fellow of the Econometric Society in 2015.

Professor Antrās received his B.A. and M.Sc. in Economics from Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. He completed his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2003. His research provided the workhorse model to study firm’s global sourcing strategies, which led to the emergence of a voluminous literature on empirical trade and applied theory.

Sumit Agarwal Low Tuck Kwong Distinguished Professor of Finance at the Business School, Professor of Economics and Real Estate at the National University of Singapore.

Professor Sumit Agarwal is Low Tuck Kwong Distinguished Professor of Finance at the Business School and a Professor of Economics and Real Estate at the National University of Singapore. Previously he held positions as Professor of Finance at Georgetown University, senior financial economist in the research department of Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and a senior vice president and credit risk management executive in the Small Business Solutions Group of Bank of America.

Prof. Agarwal's research interests include issues relating to financial institutions, household finance, behavioral finance, international finance, real estate markets, urban economics and capital markets. He has published over fifty research articles in various reputed journals viz. American Economic Review, Journal of Money Credit and Banking, Journal of Political Economy, Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Financial Economics. His writings were also featured on various media outlets like BBC, CNBC and Fox. He runs a blog on household financial decision making called Smart Finance.

Prof. Agarwal has won various prestigious awards like the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, Outstanding Researcher Award at the National University of Singapore, the Paul Samuelson TIAA-CREF certificate of excellence and many more.

Prof. Agarwal has a Bachelors’ degree in Computer Science and a Master in Economics from University of Wiskonsin. He is a PhD in Financial Economics from the same University.

Jeffrey H. Harris Gary D. Cohn Goldman Sachs Chair in Finance Professor, Department of Finance and Real Estate, American University

Professor Jeffrey H. Harris is the Gary Cohn Goldman Sachs Endowed Chair in Finance at the Kogod School of Business at American University. With an extensive background in market microstructure and regulatory issues, Dr. Harris has served as Chief Economist at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. He also has prior experience as Visiting Academic at the Nasdaq Stock Market and at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
Prof. Harris is an eminent researcher and his research works has found its place in highly reputed journals like the Energy Journal, Financial Management, The Financial Review, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Futures Markets, the Journal of Investment Management, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Journal of Futures Markets, the Review of Futures Markets, the Review of Financial Studies among others.

He has held faculty appointments at various reputed institutions such the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University where he was the Dean’s Chair in Finance, the Collins Chair of Finance in the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University (visiting), at the University of Delaware, at the University of Notre Dame and at The Ohio State University. Prof. Harris received his B.A. in Physics and MBA from the University of Iowa and his Ph.D. in Finance from The Ohio State University.
